Exploring the Lower Emerald Pool Trail: A Zion National Park Adventure

Discover one of Zion National Park’s easy and beloved trails with the Lower Emerald Pool hike, leading you to a stunning lake and waterfall. This trail is a favorite among many park visitors, and here’s everything you need to know to enjoy it.

About the Hike:
– Distance: 1.4 miles
– Type: Out & Back
– Avg. Time: 30 mins
– Difficulty: Easy
– Dog Friendly: No

The Lower Emerald Pool trail is accessible to most visitors, offering a pleasant journey across a bridge and along a mostly paved path to the pool. Here, you can even walk behind a small, picturesque waterfall. While swimming in the pool is not permitted, there are plenty of spots perfect for photos and getting close to the water.

The trail can be extended to include visits to the lower and middle pools, although it’s worth noting that the viewpoint from the lower pool area isn’t particularly impressive.

Important Note: Currently, the bridge from the Zion Lodge Trailhead is out of service. The official alternative route starts from the Kayenta Trail at Stop 6 (The Grotto), which adds an extra 1.5 miles round trip. Some visitors also choose to cross the river, a relatively easy option but undertaken at one’s own risk.

Lower Emerald Pool Trailhead & Parking:
The trailhead for Lower Emerald Pool is accessible from Stop 5 (Zion Lodge) on the Zion Shuttle. During peak times, shuttle use is mandatory. Additional access points include Stop 6 (The Grotto) via the Kayenta Trail and Stop 4 (Court of the Patriarchs) via the Sand Bench Trail. Parking at the trailhead is reserved for Zion Lodge guests.

Best Time to Hike:
This hike is enjoyable in any season. Fall is particularly delightful with mild weather and vibrant foliage. Summer visitors should avoid peak heat, but the trail’s short length and shaded areas make it manageable even on hot days. The waterfall area remains cool and refreshing.

Starting the Hike:
The trail begins across the main road from Stop 5 (Zion Lodge). After leaving the shuttle near the lodge, head towards the road and water, reaching a bridge about 0.1 miles from the lodge. Cross the bridge and follow the trail alongside the river for about 0.2 miles on a shaded, paved path.

At roughly 0.4 miles, you’ll arrive at an overhang where the waterfall cascades down. The emerald pool lies to your right, offering various photo opportunities. If you wish to extend your hike, continue to the middle and upper pools. The viewpoint here is modest, but the upper pool is quite rewarding.

For a shorter adventure, simply return the way you came after exploring the lower pool area.

Tips and FAQs:
– The bridge is currently out, so use the Kayenta Trail or cross the river, bearing in mind the water is very cold.
– The lower pool, especially with the waterfall, is an excellent spot to explore, even if it’s not the most spectacular pool in Zion.
