Exploring the Upheaval Dome Trail: Your Ultimate Hiking Guide in Canyonlands

The Upheaval Dome Trail Hike is one of my top picks in Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky area. This trail offers fascinating views of a mysterious crater with intriguing formation theories. We were fortunate to have the entire trail to ourselves by starting our hike early in the day. If you’re planning to explore this trail too, read on for advice and useful information.

About the Hike
– Distance: 1.6 miles
– Type: Out & Back
– Avg. Time: 40 mins
– Difficulty: Easy

The trail features two distinct outlooks that provide different perspectives of the crater. We visited both and highly recommend you do the same if time allows. The second outlook turned out to be my favorite, offering several nice spots to sit, relax, and take in the incredible views.

From the same trailhead, you can also access the Syncline Loop Trail, which circles the crater. However, this trail lacks crater views, involves some pathfinding, and generally sees fewer hikers. We decided to skip it, but if you do venture onto Syncline Loop, we’d love to hear about your experience in the comments or via email.

The Story Behind the Dome
Two main theories (and perhaps a third involving aliens) explain the formation of the Upheaval Dome:

Theory 1: The Salt Dome
Approximately 300 million years ago, an inland sea covered this region. As the sea evaporated, it left large amounts of salt behind. Over time, the salt pushed the surrounding land upward, creating the dome. The continuous pressure caused the rocks to tilt and crack, forming the structure we see today.

Theory 2: Meteorite Impact
Around 200 million years ago, a meteorite slammed into this area, generating tremendous force that vaporized water and shattered rocks. The impact created an upturned crater, which erosion has since shaped into its current form. This meteorite theory is currently the more widely accepted of the two.

Hiking the Upheaval Dome Trail
The trail begins at the Upheaval Dome parking lot. It’s a great next stop if you’ve already checked out Mesa Arch.

At the start, you’ll see a sign that explains your hiking options. Although the Syncline Loop Trail might appeal to some, stick to the Upheaval Dome Trail for the best crater views.

If you’re pressed for time, aim for at least the first overlook, which is just 0.3 miles in. This vantage point provides informative displays about the dome’s theories.

Continue along the trail to the left of the first overlook to reach the second outlook. This part of the hike involves some elevation changes but rewards you with even better views. Look for cairns to guide you along the rocky path.

After about half a mile, you’ll arrive at the second overlook, an open area ideal for a break. We enjoyed our breakfast here, basking in the early morning tranquility.

You can also explore a small outcropping near the second overlook for more views, though they don’t differ much from the main vantage point. Once you’ve soaked in the scenery, retrace your steps to return to the parking lot.

Tips and Advice
– Hike early to avoid crowds. We did this right after visiting Mesa Arch, and it was perfect.
– Summer temperatures can be extreme; dress appropriately and wear sunscreen.
– Bring plenty of water.
– Good footwear is essential. While you might manage without hiking boots, they are recommended for the slick rocks.
– Both viewpoints are worth visiting, but if you’re short on time, the first one suffices.
