Even those who aren’t engineers are likely familiar with this legendary inventor. His most productive years were spent in New Jersey, where his laboratory operates as a window into his genius.

Designated as a National Monument in 1956 and a national historic site in 1962, Thomas Edison’s Laboratory in West Orange is a fascinating destination. Built under Edison’s oversight in 1887, the lab housed his experiments and manufacturing efforts. Edison cleverly compartmentalized various projects into different buildings and used darkened glass to prevent prying eyes, safeguarding his intellectual property.

While Edison is often credited with inventing the lightbulb, he actually improved upon earlier designs to create a more practical and economical version. Another major contribution Edison made was the movie camera, earning him a significant place in cinematic history. Visitors to the park can view a replica of the Black Maria, Edison’s original mobile movie studio designed to capture the best lighting conditions. Though the original is no longer there, the replica captures the spirit of innovation.

The site holds the largest collection of Edison artifacts in one location, including original inventions and tools. The Edison Laboratories were operational for 40 years, making it awe-inspiring to stand in the very place where groundbreaking creations came to life.

Visitor Information:
– Note: Many buildings are currently closed due to COVID-19.
