Attending school for engineering makes it inevitable to know about Thomas Edison. Even if you’re not an engineer, you’ve likely heard of this iconic inventor. Those more familiar with him are aware that much of his groundbreaking work took place in New Jersey.<\/p>\n
Thomas Edison\u2019s Laboratory was recognized as a National Monument in 1956 and later as a national historic site in 1962.<\/p>\n
Exploring Thomas Edison\u2019s Laboratory in West Orange<\/p>\n
Constructed in 1887 under Edison\u2019s direct supervision, the laboratory was designed for his experiments and manufacturing efforts. Edison had a unique approach to organizing his workspaces by dividing them into separate buildings and using darkened glass to prevent unauthorized glances inside. This setup ensured the protection of his intellectual property.<\/p>\n
While Edison is famously associated with the invention of the lightbulb, he did not actually invent it. Instead, he improved upon existing designs to create a more practical and affordable version, earning him much of the credit.<\/p>\n
One of Edison’s most pivotal inventions is the movie camera, cementing his role as a founding figure in the film industry. When you visit, you can see a replica of the Black Maria, the original movable movie studio; the replica is built to the original\u2019s specifications.<\/p>\n
The site boasts the largest collection of Edison artifacts, including original inventions and tools used by Edison and his team. The Edison Laboratories operated for four decades as a hub of experimentation and production. It’s truly a remarkable experience to see where these historic innovations were brought to life.<\/p>\n

Please note that many buildings are still closed due to Covid-19. Verify ahead if indoor access is important to your visit. The surrounding area remains open to the public.<\/p>\n

\nOperating Hours: 11 AM – 4 PM, Friday to Sunday (Winter Covid Hours)
\nFees: $15 for adults (currently waived during Covid as most buildings are closed)
\nVisitor Center: Not open due to Covid, but there\u2019s an outdoor center available from 11 AM – 4 PM, Friday to Sunday
