One of the 19th century’s greatest milestones, the Golden Spike National Historical Park celebrates the completion of the transcontinental railroad, a pivotal moment in uniting America.<\/p>\n
Must-See Attractions<\/p>\n
Promontory Station:
\nPromontory Station, which doubles as the Visitor Center, is where history was made in 1869. Leland Stanford celebrated the driving of the final spike, known as the Golden Spike, here, linking the East and West rail lines. Although the original Golden Spike is housed at Stanford University, you can view various replicas on-site. The station features exhibits that delve into the construction and history of the railroad, much of which was built by Chinese laborers. Don’t miss the distinct track styles laid by the different railroad companies.<\/p>\n
Jupiter Steam Locomotive:
\nStep outside the Visitor Center to see a replica of the original Jupiter locomotives that participated in the “wedding of the rails” ceremony. Daily from May 1st to October 11th, you can watch the Jupiter Steam train traverse the area near the Golden Spike. This is a highlight of any visit to Promontory Point.<\/p>\n

– October 12th \u2013 April 30th: Locomotives are housed in the Engine House with ranger talks available at 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM, Thursday through Monday.<\/p>\n
Auto Tour:
\nExplore two auto tours showcasing historical points around the Golden Spike site. The east tour is 2 miles, and the west tour is about 7 miles long. Both tours highlight key construction points, including the Chinese arch and various blasting and siding areas. Be cautious as the roads are narrow and may become tricky. These roads may also close during winter or inclement weather.<\/p>\n
Plan Your Visit:
\nGolden Spike National Historical Park is a gem at nearly 5,000 feet elevation. The Station and various exhibits are fascinating, but a must-see is the Jupiter Steam Train in action. Time your visit around these demonstrations for the best experience. The exhibits, while interesting, are relatively quick to go through unless you’re a hardcore train enthusiast. The auto tours, though informative, weren’t my favorite and can be skipped if you\u2019re short on time.<\/p>\n

Site Hours:
\nThe area’s auto tour and grounds generally close around 6 PM, with other sites closing at dusk. Gates for auto tour roads may close at varying times.<\/p>\n

\n– Motorcycle: $15.00
\n– Per Person (walking, bicycling): $10.00
\n– Under 15 years: Free<\/p>\n
Pet Policy:
\nPets are allowed on the grounds but must be leashed and are not permitted inside the Visitor Center. Be mindful of the loud locomotive noises.<\/p>\n

Getting There:<\/p>\n
From the North:
\n– Take I-15N to Exit 365 onto UT-83. Follow for about 20 miles and look for signs to Golden Spike NHP on Golden Spike Dr.<\/p>\n
From the South:
\n– Take I-15S to I-84W, exit 40 onto UT-102 W. Drive about 25 miles, merging onto UT-83N towards Golden Spike Dr. Follow signs to the park.<\/p>\n
